Puppy Mill Capital of the World

March 30th, 2009 by Tess

If you’ve ever walked into a pet store and saw those cute puppies in the window, in many instances they have come from a puppy mill.
This Nightline special will make you think twice about purchasing a puppy when you aren’t able to see the facility it came from or speak directly with a breeder.
If you are thinking of getting a dog, please consider adoption first. Or if you must get a pure bred pup, please do your research and purchase from a reputable breeder that allows you to see where the pups are bred and raised.

Muttpuppet Review

March 17th, 2009 by Tess

I gave “Abby the Destroyer” the Original Muttpuppet to try out last night. I use her for toy tests because she pretty much has destroyed every plush toy she’s been given. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a plush toy destroyer in the house.
The Original Muttpuppet has a treat pocket on the back that comes with a pressed rawhide. It’s tucked in that pocket pretty well, so it takes some work and ripping of the toy to get it out.
For a dog like Abby, this isn’t the most ideal situation, because she will stop at nothing to get the rawhide out, and did. She had the end of the pocket ripped open and the rawhide removed in about 20 minutes.

That being said, I would like to stress a few things about this, and any toy. If your dog is like my dog, I don’t think any amount of reinforced stitching or plush toy ‘o steel is going to keep your dog from tearing it to pieces.

HOWEVER… What I LOVE about this toy is the fact that there is NO STUFFING. This makes it extremely safe for your pet and great for you because you wont be running through the house cleaning up stuffing.
If you have a dog that isn’t as rough with their toys, this is a great toy.
My foster pup Blue loves it and runs through the house with it.

They make 2 sizes of the Muttpuppet and a double toy connected with a rope called Muttnuts. We sell all three at Fetch.

Black Dogs Face Uphill Climb in Getting Adopted

March 14th, 2009 by Tess

Here’s a great article from Bark magazine about the issue the black dogs face in being adopted into homes. http://www.thebark.com/content/black-dogs-face-hard-choice-shelter

Get the word out! Tell everyone you know that’s looking for a dog to give black dogs a chance.

The Chow-hound, the speed-eater… My dog woofs down her food faster than the speed of light!

March 13th, 2009 by Tess

Does this sound like your pet? One of my dogs, Abby, is a classic speed eater. I barely get the bowl on the floor before she has it empty. This is a cause of worry for me for a number of reasons – but the biggest one is a problem called Bloat.
Some dogs are more prone to the problem than others, but some studies suggest that it can be caused by dogs that eat too fast.
I tried a couple of things to get her to slow down.
1. Feed her from my hand. This works great unless you’re like me, and have other dogs. They eventually also want what’s in your hand so there will always be issues. I did try it for a month or so. Didn’t slow her down.
2. I put warm water in her food. It did slow her down. However I recently read that adding water to a dogs food can worsen the probability of bloat in dogs that bolt their food.

Now that I’ve given you some background in my situation (because you may share the same background) – let me share with you what I found to correct the speed-eating.

I found a dish called the Brake-fast. It’s a bowl that is designed with 3 pegs in the middle of the bowl. It slows the dog down, because they have to take their time to get the food out from in between the pegs. Abby tried this out 3 days ago and the difference in her eating is amazing. She no longer inhales her food and then makes those awful noises that sound like she’s gasping for air.

We recently started carrying the bowl here at Fetch. It comes in 3 sizes: Small (for your toy breeds, flat faced dogs and cats), Medium (works for most breeds) and Large (for the giant breeds).
