The Chow-hound, the speed-eater… My dog woofs down her food faster than the speed of light!

Does this sound like your pet? One of my dogs, Abby, is a classic speed eater. I barely get the bowl on the floor before she has it empty. This is a cause of worry for me for a number of reasons – but the biggest one is a problem called Bloat.
Some dogs are more prone to the problem than others, but some studies suggest that it can be caused by dogs that eat too fast.
I tried a couple of things to get her to slow down.
1. Feed her from my hand. This works great unless you’re like me, and have other dogs. They eventually also want what’s in your hand so there will always be issues. I did try it for a month or so. Didn’t slow her down.
2. I put warm water in her food. It did slow her down. However I recently read that adding water to a dogs food can worsen the probability of bloat in dogs that bolt their food.

Now that I’ve given you some background in my situation (because you may share the same background) – let me share with you what I found to correct the speed-eating.

I found a dish called the Brake-fast. It’s a bowl that is designed with 3 pegs in the middle of the bowl. It slows the dog down, because they have to take their time to get the food out from in between the pegs. Abby tried this out 3 days ago and the difference in her eating is amazing. She no longer inhales her food and then makes those awful noises that sound like she’s gasping for air.

We recently started carrying the bowl here at Fetch. It comes in 3 sizes: Small (for your toy breeds, flat faced dogs and cats), Medium (works for most breeds) and Large (for the giant breeds).
