Lots of scary weather lately. Thunder, lightening, hail and even tornados. Fourth of July is coming up and big booms and flashes of light can wreak havoc on a pet. When it comes to storms, pets can often predict that one is on its way by feeling vibrations, sensing a change in barometric pressure. Then lose it! If your pets are afraid of storms, it’s more than likely that fireworks will be terrifying. What makes it worse is there is no advanced warning.
Here are some ways to help. Keep in mind, the flight risk is huge! Keep your pets inside on the 4th. Also, try to be with them. Keep your pets reassured by staying grounded. If you are not calm they will not be, because your pets are completely capable of absorbing your emotions and demeanor. NO JOKE! Reassuring words, loving strokes and lots of petting, even encouraging them to go and hide can be a huge help. Other ways: use white noise to drown out the sound and even some calming music, that has been known to be therapeutic, can be utilized. In addition, there are essential oils, and pheromone collars that mimic mama’s pheromones, enhanced with a little calming lavender, that can help. And if you are inclined to be even more new-agey, you can do some reiki work, especially focusing on the heart chakra.
Stay focused and committed to this effort to calm them. There may be some trial and error, but keep up the effort until you find what combination works for your fearful friends. It’s not a laughing matter.
